P&G Critical of Facebook; Twitter Takes Down Motrin

November 18th, 2008

Well here is a Catch-22 of social media.  AdAge reported that Ted McConnell, general manager-interactive marketing and innovation at P&G, questioned Facebook‘s potential as a marketing platform saying “What in heaven’s name made you think you could monetize the real estate in which somebody is breaking up with their girlfriend?” And also this week, the Mommy mini-bloggers of Twitter criticized Motrin’s new marketing message so harshly that McNeil Consumer Healthcare pulled the entire media campaign because of the criticism on the mini-blogging site. So, is

This illustration from Patrick Moberg caught my attention as it captures one of the many changes that Barack Obama brings as president, and more importantly how he reflects the changing demographics in the United States.

SEO on Flickr (via Creative Commons)

November 4th, 2008

My friend and fellow blogger David Berkowitz wrote a great article about how Flickr users can optimize their photos for search, connect to friends and fellow bloggers and how allowing one’s photos to be used across the web under Creative Commons will drive SEO for your site.  Great points. This reminded me of my recent post about Creative Commons and an insightful comment I received from Mark Sebastian who shares his photos using CC.  Remember, this scares a lot of photographers because it takes control

The Future of Print Media: QR Codes and Customizable Mailings

November 2nd, 2008

Not only was it a brutal month for the economy, but for print media as well. As October drew to a close, the Christian Science Monitor announced that it was discontinuing its daily paper edition, changing it to a weekly paper edition and publishing daily updates to its website. In addition, PaidContent.org announced that my former company, Time Inc, would be restructuring a number of major titles into the News Business Unit, while the NYTime.com forecast that Time Inc would shed 600 jobs because of

October 28th, 2008

A friend shared this video with me – Do You Know 2.0 – which highlights some interesting statistics about globalization, new media and how the U.S. compares with India and China. How is the 21st century different than the 20th and how will we prepare our students for this environment? Click here to join the conversation about educational reform with other educational bloggers and administrators. While the video was uploaded about one year ago, the questions are more prescient than ever.

What’s the difference between blogging and website publishing?

October 26th, 2008

What’s the difference between blogs and regular websites nowadays? It seems not much anymore. As Richard Jalichandra, the CEO of Technorati, said here “It’s getting harder and harder to define. Many mainstream media sites are adding blogs and blogging styles into their mix, many of the larger blogs are taking on features of mainstream sites and some blogs have transformed into full-blown mainstream media sites themselves with editorial staffs and business functions.” And with so many blogs out there and the barrier to entry for

Presential Debates 2008 – The Funny Version

October 5th, 2008

Thanks to my friend Pablo Slough for sharing this hilarious video, a re-working of the 1st presidential debate. The final seconds of the video read “Context is everything,” promoting The-Contrarian.org which according to their “About” page says…. The Contrarian is a tool that brings into focus disparate facts and views in today’s media narrative. Taking content entirely from published articles and photos, The Contrarian seeks to sharpen the edges of the hazy world view presented by internet media. The product of this effort seeks not

September 26th, 2008

Lots of insights coming out about blogging this week. Most notably, Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere report came out. More on that in an upcoming post…. My friend David Berkowitz at 360i wrote two excellent articles this week: 1) Blog search stuck in Beta on MediaPost about how to improve blog search engines 2) Blog Startups and Superstars on his blog – MarketersStudio.com – about notable blogging companies that he met at Blog World Expo. I am hoping to try out Lijit and Zemanta soon.
